  • Look at the ideas below. Which of them do you think may be true? Which do you think are not true?

 

Just a Myth?

 

 

a. English people drink tea every day at five o'clock.

 b. Italian people eat pasta every day.

 c. It's always cold in Moscow.

 d. All Spanish people enjoy bullfighting.

 e. Japanese people are very polite.

  f. People in Argentina are crazy about football.

 g. People in the United States are very keen on fast food.

 

 

h. People in Australia have a lot of barbecues.

i. You often see camels in Arab countries.

 j. Men in Scotland normally wear kilts.

 

  •    Read some information from people who live in these countries giving their opinions. Do they agree or not?

 

a.

If you're at home, maybe. I think a lot of people have a cup of tea around then. But most people are at work, or on their way home, so, no, I don't think it's true, really.

b.

Well, in my family it's true, yes. We eat pasta at home every day. I think Italian people eat a lot of pasta; it's very common in my region at least. So, I think maybe yes, it's true.

c.

I've lived in Moscow for a few years now. In the winter, I can tell you, yes … it's really, really cold. Minus twenty degrees, and of course, at night it's even colder. But you know, in the summer it's sometimes very hot, maybe twenty five degrees... so no, it's not always cold. Definitely not.

d.

Maybe in the south it's more popular, but I think most people in Spain nowadays aren't really interested in bullfighting. They even tried to stop it completely in one city, in Barcelona. I don't like it myself … so I think this is a myth, really.

e.

I think it's true, yes. We always try to show good behavior in public. We don't like it when people are rude or shout. Yes, I think it's true for Japanese people.

f.

Definitely, definitely … people in Argentina love football. It's a passion for them, a great, great passion.

g.

I don't think it's true. People have the impression that we just eat burgers and fried chicken and that kind of fast food, but there's a whole lot of other stuff which people enjoy. We eat all kinds of things really.

h.

Yeah, I'd say it's true. Most Australian people live on the coast, so the weather's always OK.... so it's nice to eat outside, invite a few friends round.

i.

Well, I live in Dubai, and in the city you don't often see camels, but if you go out into the desert, sure you see plenty of camels … there are even camel races sometimes.

g.

Well, you do see Scottish people wearing kilts, but only on special occasions … weddings maybe, or where the Scotland rugby team or football team is playing. But generally, no … you don't see people wearing kilts normally.
