Unit 3 Appearance and Character

The attitude of people to a person depends on many things: his character, mind, manners, behaviour, abilities and appearance. If a person is good-looking, he feels more confident. Unfortunately, to be pretty or handsome doesn't mean to be happy. Very often beautiful people are stupid, stubborn and arrogant. And unattractive people can be intelligent, kind and generous. That's why people say: "Do not judge by appearance".

I have many friends, but Jane Brown and Andy Johnson are my special friends. Andy is tall and lean. Jane is of medium height. She isn't slim, she is pretty plump. Andy is strong and well-built. As for Jane, she doesn't care about her figure. She is never on a diet and hates doing morning exercises. That's why she often puts on weight.

Andy took after his father in appearance and character. His face is long and thin. His features are regular. He has got large wide-set and deep-set eyes. They are hazel. His nose is straight, his cheeks are hollow. He has full lips. He is a brunette. He has got dark straight thick hair.

My classmates envy that my bosom friend is Andy. I respect many traits of his character. He is honest, brave, and cheerful with a good sense of humour. He is always the life and soul of the party. I am proud of my friend because he is caring, faithful and sincere. He is always ready to help me when it is necessary. We have much in common, we spend plenty of time together and I appreciate his charming personality more than his appearance.

Jane looks like her mother. She is a blue-eyed girl. Everybody admires her expressive shining eyes. She has got thick long eyelashes. Her eyebrows are penciled; her nose is small and snub. Jane has plump cheeks with dimples in them. She never worries about her hairdo, because she has got beautiful, long, thick, curly hair. She thinks she would look nicer with a short haircut, and wants to change the colour of her hair, but her mother doesn't let her do it. To look more attractive she sometimes wears make-up. Now let me give a touch on Jane's character. It is easy to get along with her. People find her sociable and easygoing. Nobody can call her selfish, greedy, ill-bred or angry. She is reserved, modest and good-tempered. I think she is of a romantic nature; she is interested in music, art, theatre. She is keen on literature, especially she likes poems.

B: Tell me about the others in your family, Ann.

A: Well, the youngest and the smallest one is Fred; he is the baby of the family. He is only four. Then there are Hans and Peter, the twins. They are exactly as old as each other, thirteen, and exactly as tall as each other, and they are so much alike that people can hardly tell one from the other.

A: Why do you look so worried, Helen?

H: The news of my daughter's engagement has nearly killed me in fact.

A: I thought you liked John.

H: I hardly know him. All that was so unexpected.

A: You'll learn to love him when you know him better. I'm sure he'll prove to be a good husband and an affectionate son. I've known him for years.

H: But he looks so strange. So very tall, with small head flat at the top, too large green eyes, big ears and that long sharp nose of his. Besides he looks old for his age.

A: Oh, you are exaggerating things. True, he's a bit too tall but his big green eyes are clever, intelligent eyes.

H: I wish his face were not so ugly.

A: Why, I like his face: there's something awfully nice about it. He isn't ugly at all, especially when he smiles and shows those perfect teeth of his.

H: I thought Ella would choose Henry. He is serious and decidedly handsome. They would make such a nice couple.

A: You'll never make me agree with you. Henry is good-looking, indeed, but there's something unkind in the look of his grey eyes. I always feel uncomfortable when he looks at me. It's wise of your daughter to have chosen John. Remember: appearances are deceitful; a fair face may hide a foul soul.
